Below is a picture of a white tiger. This was taken at Big Cat Rescue. Big Cat Rescue is a non-profit, educational sanctuary and is devoted to rescuing and providing a permanent home for exotic (i.e. wild, not domestic) cats who have been abused, abandoned, bred to be pets, retired from performing acts, or saved from being slaughtered for fur coats, and to educating the public about these animals and the issues facing them in captivity and in the wild.

The sanctuary houses the most diverse population of exotic cats in the world, with 16 of the 35 species of wild cat represented among more than 100 residents. These include tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals and others, many of whom are threatened, endangered, or now extinct in the wild.

After seeing a picture of an Ocicat, I did some research and here’s what I learned:

Ocicats was developed completely by accident when an American breeder crossed a Siamese cat and an Abyssinian, trying to produce a Siamese with a different color. The result was a mottle-spotted kitten with a wonderful personality, but which looks wild and dangerous. They named it an “Ocicat” because it looked like a cross between an Ocelot and a Cat.

Weighing 6 to 14 pounds, the Ocicat is a medium-sized. It has a powerful, graceful body and muscular legs. The head has a distinct wedge shape with large, Siamese like ears. These cats have eyes with a slightly Oriental shape that are surrounded by dark color. A long, gracefully tapered tail completes the wild appearance of this breed.

While the original Ocicat was ivory-colored with golden spots, there are now numerous additional colors that are recognized. You will see these spotted cats in Tawny, Chocolate, Cinnamon, Blue, Lavender, and Fawn colors. In addition, Ocicats come in spotted tabby, spotted silver tabby, and spotted smoke patterns of all of the above colors.

Ocicats are extremely outgoing and people-oriented so you should not own one if you are away a lot. The Ocicat will become depressed or upset when left a long for long periods. They are very playful cats, so play with them often and have lots of toys for them. They do well in multi-cat families. They are also very intelligent and have a sweet nature.

The Ocicat does not have to be groomed as often as many cats but most do like it and you should groom them a couple of times a week. More often, and your Ocicat will really love you!

Kira here. What’s so special about spots? I have a tuxedo, which is a lot more dignified than spots! Oh well, I’m sure it’s an okay cat. Just don’t bring one around here. Kira, out!

Let me introduce you to Oscar the cat. Oscar has an uncanny ability to predict when a resident at Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Providence, Rhode Island, is about to die. He is essentially an early warning system. When he goes to a patient’s room and stays there, the nursing staff begin calling the resident’s family members and clergy for last rites.

Oscar waits with the resident. Usually within hours, the patient dies and Oscar leaves the room — his job is done. He is also a comfort for those who have no family and would otherwise die alone.

Here’s a picture of this cat angel:

Oscar has been the the center since he was a kitten. He’s somewhat aloof, however, when he does come to stay, people take notice. So far, he has presided over the deaths of over 25 residents.

He work is highly regarded by the staff and family members. He has received an engraved plaque from a local hospice agency. The plaque reads: “For his compassionate hospice care, this plaque is awarded to Oscar the Cat.”

Kira here. Now, that’s pretty impressive. I have some foresight too. I can tell when someone is watching me when I’m asleep. Nobody can sneak up on me. I’d take my skill over Oscar’s any day. Snicker, Kira

Non-Native Species Extermination Bill, H.R. 767, unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives last month. Please contact your Senator and urge them to vote NO on H.R.767 when it comes to the Senate floor. This bill, officially called the Refuge Ecology Protection, Assistance, and Immediate Response Act (or REPAIR Act), includes feral cats as one of the species targeted for destruction.

Here’s a picture of several of my feral cats, turned in-door cats. As you can see by the pictures, they are no longer feral. I can’t imagine my life without these wonderful cats.

Take Action NOW — Here’s How

Please call, email or send a letter (or all 3) to your Senator urging them to vote NO on H.R. 767 when it comes to the floor of the Senate. Below is a sample letter I sent to my Senator through IDA (In Defense of Animals). Copy and paste it, change it if you want, but please sent it! And, tell your friends to as well!

our senator’s name here
U.S. Senate
331 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510-0001

Dear Senator Feinstein,

I am writing as a constituent and a voter to ask that you please
vote No on H.R.767 when it comes up for a vote on the Senate
floor.

Officially called the Refuge Ecology Protection, Assistance, and
Immediate Response Act (or REPAIR Act), H.R.767 includes feral
cats as one of the species targeted for destruction. The bill
would place no restrictions on the species that may be killed or
the methods used to eliminate them, and allow the federal
government, using taxpayer money, to enlist hunters and trappers
as the exterminating agents.

The government need not pursue the eradication of feral cats to
protect native animals. Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) programs
are the most humane and effective way to manage feral cat
populations while preserving wildlife. Please vote No on H.R.
767.

Sincerely,
Your name here

The IDA’s petition I mentioned in my Dec. 12 blog, has been taken down but is urging everyone to contact our Senators and friends. I have asked them to put it back up and will let you know when/if that happens.

Lee here. Yeah, please save my feral cousins. I for one love my new sister, CoCo. (Could live without Snobal but I wouldn’t want her killed!) Nuff said, Lee .
